It was a quiet day, deadly dull to play guard along the expanse of the wall. It could have been the weather- the skies loomed a dully ominous grey, darkening the skies despite the early afternoon hour, threatening the possibility of a vicious storm in the near future. Because of the potential for such weather, few were inclined to wander far from their homes and any potential shelter from rain should it choose to pour down upon them. True, the people were generally used to such weather, as it was typical to get rained upon this time of year. But if this storm performed as expected…
Small wonder the people chose to take on a more subdued pattern in their daily routines today, Reece thought. Crouched on a merlon like a bird at rest, he couldn’t blame them. His frequent glances up at the sky resulted in a faint frown. Pity for those unfortunate enough to play guard today. It was already chill enough, and precipitation would do nothing to assist in making the long hours of their watch any less pleasant. Still, at lest they wouldn’t have to worry too much about… anything, really. From his perch, Reece could see nothing moving beyond the wall. Even the birds seemed to have decided for the shelter of their trees and brush. Well, those that remained. Many had flown south by this time, he wagered. Briefly, he wondered where they had gone to. Egypt, maybe? He’d heard of Egypt from brief snatches of Roman conversation. A place that was always summer and covered in sand, like the beaches? He didn’t know how true the tales were, but he remained a staunch disbeliever for the time. That sounded like something out of a child’s tale! How could a land be covered in sand so far from the shore?!
Ah. His mind was wandering again. Reece sighed involuntarily. His mind did have a tendency to wander while he was bored. And bored he certainly was. With this foul sky he didn’t feel too enthused about the option of hunting, even though the sport was a favorite way to pass the time. With all the settlement around here, hunting was fairly poor, but sometimes he found things. Not like he was out to kill all the creatures he could, anyways. It was the exploration he loved, where he could investigate all the hills, rocks and trees. Acquiring game for a few good meals was just a bonus.
Briefly, he wondered if he should go ahead and just get caught in the rain. He didn’t mind the damp too much, honestly. But would Arthur approve? He had to give pause to that. Although he’d been in the king’s service for several years now, the concept of being directly under him was still one the young man was getting used to. Having been raised half-wild, the order of civilization was something that he was still getting used to. And to think! Of all the things, a king’s messenger! His father would never believe him if Reece told him.
He wondered how his father was doing. Was the flock doing well? Hopefully he hadn’t run into much trouble with wolves again…
Overhead, the sky rumbled. Reece frowned as he looked upwards once again. Looked like it was going to storm after all. Hopefully sooner, rather than later. Then it would be over and done with and he could find something to occupy his time. That was the biggest thing that Reece didn’t care for. It was always hurry up and wait, hurry up and wait. He always had to be relatively close at hand in case his services were required. Would Arthur need him soon? He was growing restless with boredom and inactivity…
